GOP Rep. McCotter to run write-in campaign for president
May 29th 2012, 20:48

LANSING, Mich. –  U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter says he'll run a write-in campaign after the Detroit-area Republican failed to file enough valid petition signatures with the state to appear on the August primary ballot.

The five-term congressman announced the decision Tuesday. It comes after the stunning disclosure Friday that he didn't have the 1,000 valid signatures needed to get on the primary ballot.

Secretary of state spokesman Fred Woodhams said Tuesday that only 200 to 300 of the 2,000 signatures the campaign turned in appeared valid.

McCotter is running for re-election in Michigan's 11th Congressional District.

The other Republican in the race is Kerry Bentivolio, a war veteran, teacher and beekeeper from Milford.

McCotter was elected to Congress in 2002.
