Feds keep secret how billions of dollars in food stamp money spent
Jun 25th 2012, 23:28

Despite billions spent on food stamps every year and widespread concern about fraud in the program, the federal government does not disclose information about where that money is going.

The Washington Times reports that as the food stamp tab rises to $80 billion, the U.S. Department of Agriculture still refuses to reveal stats on how it's spent.

The department argues that doing so would amount to spilling trade secrets, according to the Times, by revealing how much food stamp cash each store is receiving.

States that have that information have likewise clammed up, citing the federal policy.

The concern comes as Congress debates the sprawling farm bill, which funds the food stamp program.
