Rep. Wasserman Schultz defends Obama on economy; confident about black, Latino vote Jul 8th 2012, 13:28 Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Sunday defended President Obama's efforts to improve the economy and said black and Latino voters will support the president's reelection bid despite having exceptionally high unemployment numbers. "Progress is making us go forward," Schultz, D-Fla., the Democratic National Committee chairman, said on "Fox News Sunday." "But we haven't gone far enough." Schultz repeated what Democratic leaders and Obama campaign officials have said for months, amid disappointing federal unemployment reports, that the private sector has added jobs for 28 straight months. Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee chairman, responded by saying the country has roughly 500,000 less jobs that it did four years ago. "I don't know if (Schultz) is on vacation in New Hampshire or on Mars," he said. Schultz said Obama has helped close the achievement gap for blacks and Hispanics and kept the auto industry from going bankrupt, which would have been devastating for minority voters. She also said Mitt Romney is the "most extreme" presidential candidate in U.S. history on the issue of immigration reform.
