Panetta reportedly signs order to send Patriot missiles to Turkey to help defend against Syria Dec 14th 2012, 06:24 Published December 14, 2012 FoxNews.com Dec. 11, 2012: U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, second from left, is welcomed upon his arrival at Kuwait International Airport in Kuwait City, Kuwait.AP Sec. of Defense Leon Panetta has reportedly signed an order to send Patriot missiles and 400 US military personnel to Turkey as part of a NATO coalition to defend against possible rocket attacks from Syria. Reuters reported early Friday citing The New York Times that a total of six Patriot missile batteries will be sent to Turkey: two from the United States, two from Germany and two from the Netherlands.  The six batteries will reportedly be under NATO's command and are scheduled to be operational by the end of January. Heavy fighting has often erupted along Syria's northern border with Turkey during the Syria's nearly two-year-long civil war. Turkey is supporting the Syrian opposition. Turkey has asked NATO to deploy Patriot missiles, which are designed designed to intercept aircraft or missiles, to shore up its 560-mile border with Syria.  Reuters contributed to this report.
