U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said Wednesday that administration officials have no evidence of chemical weapons being used in the country's civil war.
Ford made his statement during a Capitol Hill hearing on the Syrian crisis in which more than 70,000 civilians have been killed and an estimated 1 billion others have fled to neighboring countries.
His remarks also followed unconfirmed reports of chemical weapons used Tuesday by President Bashar Assad's regime, the rebel forces, or both.
"So far we have no evidence to substantiate those reports," Ford told the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "I want to underline that we are looking very carefully."
Ford also faced pointed questions about what the United States is doing to end the crisis, including how it will get Assad and his regime to cede power.
Ford said the U.S. continues to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid. However, the administration maintains a policy of trying to negotiate a peace settlement and not providing weapons to opposition forces.
"Our policy is not to supply military assistance," he said.
