Gallup: American pride strongest among conservatives
Jul 4th 2013, 19:30

An overwhelming majority of people in the U.S. say they are proud to be American this Fourth of July.

But, according to an Independence Day-themed poll by Gallup, conservatives are prouder than liberals.

The survey showed that 89 percent of self-identified conservatives consider themselves either "extremely" or "very" proud to be American.

When the question was put to self-identified liberals, 76 percent of them gave that answer.

The split was similar, though not quite as wide, for Republicans and Democrats.

On a whole, 85 percent of all those surveyed said they were extremely or very proud to be American.

Participants in the survey, though, were more dour when it came to whether the country has lived up to the dreams of its founders. Asked whether the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be pleased or disappointed by the U.S. today, 71 percent said they would be disappointed.

On this question, conservatives were more negative than liberals.

The poll of nearly 3,600 adults was taken in two separate samples, from June 1-4 and from June 20-24. It had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
