Pentagon must overhaul its MIA effort, GAO report says
Jul 17th 2013, 17:23

WASHINGTON –  The investigative arm of Congress says the Pentagon's efforts to find and identify American military members missing from past conflicts are undermined by leadership weaknesses and a fragmented approach.

The report echoes in some respects the criticisms cited in an internal Pentagon study disclosed last week by The Associated Press in which key aspects of the MIA accounting effort were called "dysfunctional."

Wednesday's report by the Government Accountability Office was requested by Congress last year. It said the numerous Pentagon organizations that are collectively responsible for accounting for MIAs were directed in 2009 to come up with a plan for how to more than double the rate of MIA identifications by 2015.

But the plan is still unfinished, due to what the GAO called a fragmented approach and bureaucratic infighting.
