A majority of voters think the country is worse off now than it was four years ago and that President Obama should not be re-elected, according to a new poll.
The poll conducted for The Hill newspaper found 52 percent of likely voters think the country is in "worse condition" than it was in September 2008, and 54 percent think Obama does not deserve re-election based only on his job performance.
Just 31 percent of voters thought the country is in "better condition," compared to 15 percent who said it is in roughly the same condition. Forty percent of voters said Obama deserves reelection, according to the poll.
Republicans have also posed the "better off" question recently to voters and Democratic Party leaders.
The Pulse Opinion Research poll was conducted Sept. 2 and asked 1,000 likely voters. The poll's margin of error is 3 percentage points.
