URGENT: Former New Hampshire Sen. Warren Rudman has died, Fox News confirmed Tuesday.
Rudman, a two-term Republican senator who began his public career as New Hampshire Attorney General, died Monday night. He was 82.
Rudman co-authored a ground-breaking budget balancing law in the mid 1980's known as the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings deficit reduction act.
He went to the Senate in 1981 with a reputation as a tough prosecutor, and was called upon by Senate leaders and presidents of both parties to tackle tough assignments.
Before his election to the Senate, he served six years as New Hampshire's attorney general under Gov. Walter Peterson.
Fox News' Chad Pergram and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
