Dec. 4, 2012: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa talks during a news conference on the port strike negotiations at the Port of Los Angeles.AP

LOS ANGELES –  Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says an agreement has been reached to end an eight-day strike that crippled the largest U.S. port complex.

Villaraigosa says negotiators approved the deal Tuesday night just a few hours after the arrival of federal mediators from Washington, D.C. Clerks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach had been working without a contract for more than two years. The strike prevented shippers from delivering billions of dollars in cargo to warehouses and distribution centers across the country.

At issue was the union's contention that terminal operators wanted to outsource future clerical jobs out of state and overseas -- an allegation the shippers denied. Instead, shippers said they wanted the flexibility not to fill jobs no longer needed as port workers quit or retire.
