BERLIN –  The German government says U.S. President Barack Obama will visit Germany to hold talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel and other officials next month.

Spokesman Georg Streiter said Friday that Obama will be in Berlin June 18-19.

Obama will be traveling in Europe at that time following a summit of the G-8 in Northern Ireland June 17-18, a meeting that reunites leaders of the world's major western industrialized nations.

Streiter says details of Obama's schedule and meetings in Germany have yet to be finalized.

The visit marks Obama's first official trip to the German capital as U.S. President. Obama held a major campaign rally in Berlin before his 2008 election, and has met Merkel in Germany since but not on an official state visit in the capital.
