President Obama has been briefed "several times" about the shooting Monday morning at the Washington Navy Yard, according to a White House official.
Several people have been injured in the shooting; details continue to emerge about the situation.
A White House official said counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco are keeping the president updated on the shooting.
Obama has directed his team to stay in touch with federal and local officials. The Department of Defense has the lead on the response, as the Washington Navy Yard is one of its facilities. The Department of Homeland Security is also working with local law enforcement.
"We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site," the White House official said.
Obama was planning to speak later Monday morning about the economy, marking the five-year anniversary of the financial crisis. He was hoping to return focus to domestic issues, after weeks of debate over the stand-off with Syria over its use of chemical weapons, which was tentatively resolved with a deal announced over the weekend in Geneva.
No changes to the president's schedule have yet been announced.
