Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has a slim lead over ex-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer in early returns in Tuesday's Democratic primary for city comptroller.
With 76 percent of precincts reporting, Stringer has about 52 percent of the vote, to Spitzer's 48 percent.
Interviews with voters leaving their precincts also have shown Stringer running ahead. Edison Media Research conducted exit polls for The Associated Press and other news organizations.
Spitzer and Stringer have been waging a bitter campaign for the city's top financial office.
Spitzer is seeking a comeback five years after resigning as governor and acknowledging he patronized call girls. Stringer is striving to capture a nomination he once expected to snag easily.
The winner will face a Republican and other opponents Nov. 5.
