Oct. 19, 2013: Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, speaks to members of the Texas Medical Association about the Affordable Care Act in Austin, Texas.AP
Sen. Ted Cruz said Monday he is a "U.S. citizen by birth" despite being born in Canada, amid questions about whether he is planning to run for the Republican nomination in the 2016 presidential election.
Cruz, R-Texas, said in an interview with Fusion that because his mother is an American citizen he is a citizen as well.
"I was a U.S. citizen by birth and beyond that I'm going to leave it to others to worry about the legal consequences," he said.
Cruz said he is in the process of renouncing his Canadian citizenship but has not finished yet.
However, Cruz said he is not currently focused on a potential presidential run.
"My focus is on representing 20 million Texans and bringing back jobs and economic growth," he told Fusion.
