Biden cancels trip to Tampa, site of Republican convention
Aug 25th 2012, 15:36

Vice President Biden has cancelled his trip Monday to Tampa, Fla., site of next week's Republican National Convention, citing security and storm-related concerns.

The Obama for American campaign made the announcement late Friday, after saying Biden was heading "in the belly of the beast."

"This change in schedule is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm, as well as those attending the activities in Tampa," the campaign said.

Biden's trip appears to be part of a larger effort to attempt to take some of the spotlight from Republicans during their convention week.

First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to appear Wednesday on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and the president is campaigning in three battleground states – Iowa, Colorado and Virginia.

Tropical Storm Isaac hit Haiti Saturday morning, reportedly killing three people, and is now headed for Cuba, then Florida. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. A hurricane warning has already been issued for the Florida Keys.

The Obama campaign said it will issue more information about Biden's scheduled stops Tuesday in Orlando and St. Augustine, Fla., which will be "subject to change due to weather-related precautions."
