Just 29 percent of Americans support military airstrikes against Syria, while almost half (48 percent) oppose the plan, according to a new Pew Research Center poll. Almost one-quarter of all Americans (23 percent) are still undecided.

Beginning on August 29, Pew asked 1,000 Americans, "Would you favor or oppose the U.S. conducting military airstrikes against Syria in response to reports that the Syrian government used chemical weapons?"

Republicans were most likely to support President Obama's bombing campaign, but even they opposed the plan overall, by a five-point, 40 percent to 35 percent. Opposition to bombing Syria was strongest among independents, where 50 percent opposed striking and only 29 percent opposed.

Almost three quarters of all Americans (74 percent) believe airstrikes against Syria will "create a backlash against the U.S. and its allies in the region." Just 33 percent of Americans believe bombing Syria will prevent the use of chemical weapons.
