Deadly Taliban attack on US Afghan base could have been prevented, probe finds Oct 2nd 2013, 01:01 Published October 01, 2013 Associated Press An armored vehicle patrols on the periphery of Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan, in this Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007 file photo.AP WASHINGTON – An investigation into a stunning attack on a major allied base in Afghanistan last year that killed two Marines has concluded that senior Marine generals on the base were caught by surprise despite earlier indications of security threats. The probe's conclusions were the basis for a decision Monday by the Marine Corps' top general, James Amos, to force two generals into early retirement. The investigation report was released Tuesday evening by U.S. Central Command. The report indicated that the Marines at Camp Bastion, one of the largest coalition airfields in Afghanistan, should have foreseen the possibility of a Taliban effort to penetrate the base's perimeter. Once on the base, Taliban fighters destroyed six Marine fighter jets and wounded 17 people in addition to killing two Marines. | |
