Furloughed federal employees are expected to return to work Thursday morning after the House and Senate both passed a measure to end the partial government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said President Obama would sign the bill overnight. She was instructing federal employees to follow the news and to check the Office of Personnel Management's website for further updates about returning to work.
"Now that the bill has passed the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, the President plans to sign it tonight and employees should expect to return to work in the morning. Employees should be checking the news and OPM's website for further updates," Burwell said.
The measure awaiting Obama's signature restores government funding through Jan. 15 and extends the nation's borrowing authority through Feb. 7.
Senate Sergeant at Arms Terry Gainer sent a message to employees late Wednesday informing them they should plan to return to work Thursday.
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been furloughed since the partial shutdown started Oct. 1.
