BOGATA, N.J. –  Sarah Palin is endorsing Republican Steven Lonegan in New Jersey's U.S. Senate election.

In a statement, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate says Lonegan asked for her support and she believes he embraces the state's motto, "Liberty and Prosperity."

Palin claims Lonegan's Democratic opponent, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, is out of touch because of his "constant tweeting and trips to Hollywood."

Palin says Lonegan leads with "conservative principles" and understands "government is too often the problem, not the solution."

Lonegan says Palin's support is proof the Republican Party will "always come together to stand for principled conservatives."

Lonegan is seeking the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Democrat Frank Lautenberg.

The special election takes place Oct. 16.
