One of the Tea Party groups targeted by the IRS during the last presidential election cycle has finally received its tax-exempt status.

The announcement by TheTeaParty.net -- one of the grass-roots movement's largest groups -- is among the latest developments in the IRS scandal, in which the agency targeted conservative groups for additional information when they applied for that status, according to The Washington Examiner.

The group said it was informed by the IRS in a letter Monday, three years after it applied for the exempt status.

TheTeaParty.net said IRS agents -- who targeting mostly conservative non-profit groups -- wanted information about political donors, agendas and even reading lists, which is against the rules.

The additional vetting was led by the IRS division ran by Lois Lerner, who declined to testify before Congress on the scandal, made public this spring, and who retired last month after being put on paid administrative leave.
